Get An Easy Link From A PR9 Website

Hi, Can anyone tell me if this has some mileage:

I was checking how one of my sites was ranking for my keywords and came across a competitor who gives away a piece of freeware.

I noticed that Tucows.com was ranking well for his freeware with my keywords.

I went to the Tucows page with his freeware and it had a PR4 with a direct link to his site.

    Tucows.com has a PR9.

Would he be getting anything from the PR9 part of Tucows or just the PR4?

    Second question:
This looks like a good bit of SEO strategy. Does anyone try it?
I'm a windows dev by trade and could easily whip up neat little windows freeware apps for my niche sites. Do you reckon it would be worth it.

He will get a PR4, otherwise, all links from blog posts by bloggers with PR 6 and above are worthless..no because, each post might not have even a pr3 :D

That is a very good strategy.... Just check if they do a relnofollow.. They won't want to be linking back to every malware and adware sites

I was thinking about this but I can't make little programs :)

Create a software and submit it to PAD (software database) lots of websites will pick it up and give you a link ;)
