The pr 8 would be the sites pr I would think, while the external page wouldn't be ranked yet or would be ranked differently.

Yes but a lot are no follow..

But there is a little problem, mates.

Did you check out the Twitter's robot.txt file? It just disallows any subdirectories or links within subdirectories. That's it. The link is there but it holds no weight whatever to search engines.

It is just like a nofollowl link. but it looks like a dofollow link. An ordinary link. Experts first look for a robots.txt file. If it invalidates any link, that link may look like a dofollow to untrained eyes, but they are nofollow. If robots.txt is OK, we look for a robots meta tag. If it uses somethign like "index, nofollow", then all links in the page, no matter whether specified nofollow or not, are nofollow inherently. Thirdly, they check out individual links.

So, twitter links just don't hold weight. Thanks.

I usually check whether the page is cached at Google or not. If it is, then the page is indexable.

The profile pages are being indexed. And the links therefore do carry some weight.

But as I tried to explain before, you need to build your own links to the profile pages. Otherwise, the link is pretty much worthless.

I disagree, I have seen many pages with a pr 1 or 2. While the link may not be extremely valuable, it's worth taking the two seconds to do in my opinion.

    @mattaw - I think it takes longer than 2 seconds. ;)

I may suggest that if you are not serious about using these types of sites for the promotional purposes they are designed for (ie just want a link for link sake), then use a throw away email address. At least you can keep the newsletters and whatever other garbage mail they send you separate from your business email address.

i've seen many twitterers with pagerank up to 8, but you probably need to be one of those "twitter geeks" to get this high! a free link never hurts - thanks for the tip mattaw.

Wrong. Not all backlinks are created equal.

Sheesh. This place sure does bring out a lot of link whores, spam your site somewhere else. And BTW, it looks like your article page has been hacked!

He was wrong and misinterpreted the robots.txt disallow statements.

    Disallow: /*?
    Disallow: /*/with_friends

    Code (markup):
This only blocks pages with arguments following the ? parameter and the /*/with_friends pages.

SE's are still allowed to crawl individual profile pages. You can verify this by viewing the cache at Google or any other SE result index. If it is cached. It is crawled.
