Ive been having some problems with doing well in SERPS everywhere in the world except the UK, which is the only place I really need to do well in. I think its to do with the amount of US hosted inbound links I have. But checking my whois again and then the static IP of my website I found the IP whois says Amsterdam. What does this mean? Is it only where the IP was registered. Is this a problem if I want to do well in UK SERPS?
With your tools site, it might be the .com. Getting a .co.uk is better for Google.co.uk serps. If your site is hosted in Amsterdam, and it's a .com, Google won't be able to figure out that yours is a uk-based site.
Yeah sorry its the tools site. I know, I should have gone .co.uk but I didnt know at the start and its to late now. The whois data for the domain says UK but the whois data for the IP says amsterdam. What does whois data for the IP mean?
It's where your website is physically hosted. You may even have bought your hosting from a British company, but for whatever reason their servers are abroad. So if moving your domain name is out of the question, consider moving to a different host.
.com sites are fine for UK serps. Loads of the UK sites are .coms Unless you host in the UK you have no chance of ranking here.
So even though the whois data for my URL says UK, if the IP address whois data says Holland it means my site is hosted in holand? Sorry about this but I want to know my stuff before phoneing my hosting company.
You need to be hosted in the UK, physically. Depending on where you got your info, the amsterdam info may or may not be correct and may not indicate where you're actually hosted. You might also consider buying the .co.uk then doing a 301 redirect of the .com.
