    +1 Good riddance.

I started out on a virtual server back in 1996, and prior to that on a dedicated box sharing an FT1 connection.

Geocities was always somewhat of an embarrassment. Mind you, so is MySpace... ;)

Yes it is a slice of nostalgia for sure ... Geocities and Tripod competing as the free easy spot to make a site ... one of our school assigments was to choose 1 of them and make a site.

The question is - was it outcompeted by Blogger and Squidoo, or is it just a huge liability that they are happy to get rid of?

Can't they just sell it off to someone instead of closing it! Even if it doesn't rake in a lot of moolah, my guess is that it would at least be breaking even!

Is not too surprising, myspace has over 180 million users, facebook has close to 200 million users.

geocities wasnt changing with the time when other social networks and publishers developed

Yeah, well there are TONS of other free and better web hosts than geocities out there anyways so nothing to really cry over other than the fact is was a old service that could have been better but was not taken care of.

Great, now we can lose a good chunk of spam sites on the web :p

But it really will suck for all the noob admins who use geocities consistently. Many probably will not know how to back up and move their site, much less anything about looking for a new host.

Yahoo is closing its GeoCities personal home page service, and with it will go an era of self-expression on the Web that's largely been replaced by social networks and blogs.
