That is really bad news for newbies, cause first time they don't wannna spend money to buy hosting. and i guess Geocities was the best one for them:(

Its a very sad end to such a very important part of the web in the late 1990s where I cut my teeth and started my career in web development. I learnt HTML and built my first site on Geocities. Its really sad to see that its going to end.

Everybody is going through the crisis of existence and Yahoo is feeling the pinch, the hardest!

I assume it is shedding off some of its old baggages, in the hope of getting leaner, thinner and fitter; to be able to move forward!

I wonder if it is the turn of Yahoo Groups next!

    Regards,

More like Yahoo games because people use that, just close all the things people use.

anyhow eGroups was never the same after moving to yahoo, or what how about yahoo killing Webrings in less than a year after buying it, nowonder Micro$oft want to buy yahoo and just run it into the ground...

I thought that GeoCities was clsed many years ago.
Yes, was the starting point of many webmasters, but that was the GIF era (remember all those horribles GIFs?).
ATM its only a museum piece, not something that can compete.

    It is sad.
Some times, When I think about my early WEB days - Geocities is always there to remind me where I started.

-> You mean the well known and deadly annoying ads?.
Yeah, I guess every quality web developer/designer dropped them after that.
