hmm.. thats a bad news! (especially for newbies and Individuals who wish to run a personal site)
When I first started learning about web design, I created my first website thru geocities.
Even though they close their service the name "Geocities" would remain in my mind forever as it gave me the opportunity to build my first dream site!

It is very sad. I remembered I cut my teeth on web design here on Geocities when they were still divided into "streets". Getting into a favorite address wasn't easy. But it was fun with some community spirit. After their "upgrades" I no longer used it. Well all good things must come to an end one of these days I guess.

That's sad news but its so nice of yahoo people that they are providing information that they are going to close their fantastic service asap. You can back up your data which you have posted on your geocities website. So sad...

Back in '98 or '99 I started out on Wall Street and left when I discovered PHP, put a redirect on the site and off I went.

Later they allowed PHP but back then it was html and javascript all the way. My thick html book I bought for $100 didn't even mention CSS. Yep, nostalgia!

After they made the changes I decided I wanted to change that redirect but I never managed to regain ftp access to the site. Yahoo's membership support was non-existant.

It's a shame to close it because everyone has to start somewhere, but with google pages and wordpress.com and all the other newbie options I guess they will only be missed by those of us who were around in the beginning.

My first site over ten years ago was on geocities too :) Do you think yahoo will sell geocities to someone or just shut everything down?

Geocities was great when it started up. Like so many other companies it failed to keep pace with the times. Long overdue.

I bet you they are closing because of the blogosphere much easier to build and maintain. Did anyone hear why they are closing geocities?
