Has anyone here started a GEO site targeting a specific city and actually hired salespeople to go out and sell spots on the site?

like a sections for resturants, bars, hotels etc and sold the spots on them?

if so how was your experience?

how did you pay the sales people? a % of the cost for the ads?

how much did you charge for ads?

how well did your site rank?

How did you start you site? did you begin with a lot of content or did you start by just selling ads?

were you using just a one-word city domain?

I have done this before but the profit is not worth for the job done.
The profit ratio to expenditure is average 3:10

that is intresting - I have read articles with just the opposite - but ofcourse these are just blog articles who knows if they are true of not

what type of site was it?

I own a couple of good city geo sites, i have been trying to find something to do with other than adsense. I'm not happy with just a couple bucks a day - I have a big sales background also.

You have to actually have some knowledge of that niche market. There are niches that don't need any more business. So they could care less about internet referrals because they are turning down work.

So it doesn't have to be a narrow niche, just one that would profit from internet referrals. And that can be trial and error. I am in the process but I've chosen a few and we'll see how it goes. It's more of an SEO geo experiment.
