No you don't. Having the .com.au gets you into the local search results.

Is it possible to be a .com, and have a site which is national?
    Would Google still know?

Yeah if the site is hosted on Australian servers that would work.

thankyou sir. would there be any SEO benefit of me hosting the site in aus at all? or would it do just as well on google.com.au wherever it was hosted?

I'm sure there maybe some benefit being hosted on an Aussie IP address, but it's pretty negligible in the scheme of things. Australia hosting is just too darn expensive.

I have several well ranking .com.au and they are all hosted in the US.

To the guys who asked about .coms, as opposed to hosting a dot com in Aus, which as dcristo points out is rather expensive, why not register a dot com .au

    .com.au are now pretty cheap.

    Check out DomainCentral

They are 38.00AUD for 2 years.
