Who makes use of it to better monetize foreign traffic (ie. serve up more appropriate affiliate programs based on the location of the visitor) Ive looked into this of late and there's a few alternatives to choose from. I'd be interested to hear from members who currently already use geo targetting on their sites, and how they went about implementing it. Did you use off the shelf software, build a custom script, and any other details you feel like sharing. Cheers
Hi. I am from sydney too I have incorporated geo lookups into some of my projects. On one I used GeoIP country (free version) http://www.maxmind.com/app/geoip_country which was pretty easy to use. They have some sample code that I modified. I also used the database from http://www.ip-to-country.com in a different application. Took a bit more work to setup but also worked well. BTW There are some flags available on sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/flags
Cheers for your response riziko. We must be like the only two Sydney siders on these boards, I think anyway. There's a few other aussies here though. With regard to my topic, I was hoping for a solution which was easy to implement (coming from a non-technical background) Thanks anyway though.
I am serving different ads for US and other traffic using an ip2country database. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement. I went for the ip2coutry database I found here: http://www.32tech.com/ip-to-country/ They have a sample file which should get you started.
I do it as well... I use the IP2Location database (lets me drill down to the city level) with a custom backend. It's the same DB I use for this: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/website-country/
