Looking for some advice on geo targeting cities. I'll give you an example "Denver flowers". There are directory listings as well as peoples own websites, and I'm wondering what you think it would take to get to the first page, and maybe a good strategy for geo-targeting? or is everyone just competing for national terms
Website owners who are promoting local businesses are stupid if they ONLY compete for national terms. It's much easier to rank for "Denver flowers" than to simply rank for "flowers". What it will take is a <title> element, <h1> element, and content that contains the words "Denver flowers"... and inbound links to the Denver page (from the same site and from other sites) with the link text of mainly "Denver flowers" but also "flowers in Denver", "flowers", "Denver Florists", etc.
The other thing is I'm trying to figure out what it takes to get above some of the directories like citysearch/denver/florist/.... and yellowpages/colorado/denver/flowers... Hard to judge how much link building I'll need to do.
I wouldn't even worry about them... If you really want to compete, you may have to settle for 6th or 7th place or maybe even page 2 (I haven't even looked at SERPs for a "Denver flowers" search so have no clue). But just because you can't beat CitySearch.com doesn't mean you should compete. Who knows? Maybe you WILL end up beating them. And I doubt if anyone is going to be able to tell you what it takes to beat them. Build a well SEO'd page for "Denver flowers" and then get links, links, links... with link text of "Denver flowers" or slight variations of that.
if you are using google websmater then pls set it to local business, and Use Google Local Business / Map
