A Google Webmaster Help thread once again confirms that Google ignores the geo-meta tags. Those tags somewhat look like this and use to serve the purpose of telling search engines where the site is based: <meta name="geo.placename" content="United States" /> <meta name="geo.position" content="x;x" /> <meta name="geo.region" content="usa" /> <meta name="ICBM" content="x,x" /> Google ignores them, and has for a really long time. JohnMu from Google confirmed this most recently in the thread:
We have been using GEO for all our local business customers websites for years. You need geo to get into the 7box! I would disagree that geo is 100% ignored! I can see it being ignored trying to rank and target another country or local. But if you are local and targeting your local area you will rank better with geo! Geo + on page optimization + optimized places you will rank!
