My Target market is forum users that use the classified/for sale section of forums.

How would I go about generating a buzz targetting those people?
Service is similar to ebay's rating/feedback system.

Natural word of mouth start coming up once you achieve reliability and when the service & support are extendedly well, for short term WOM you should offer something to your existing clients to refer others or implement viral marketing.

Ask yourself this... when was the last time you saw a banner for facebook, myspace, or a major forum? How about a referral system?

The fact is, word of mouth is far less about tools than it is about buzz and interest. Over 7 years ago I was involved in starting a forum for scuba diving, at the time there were a few other established sites but forums had yet to really take off. We built the forum, recruited some members and did a moderate job of promoting it. However, week after week, more and more people kept coming. Within a few years that site became the largest in the industry... Because of word of mouth. Did we have banners? Sure. Did we have link to us pages, of course. They were rarely used.

What was used was person to person communication. As a forum owner you want to build a forum that meets the needs of your community and goes above and beyond it to help connect people with common interests. Word of mouth marketing grows as people find something they like... having more email to a friend forums, banners and other tools are certainly good but what you really need is members who like your site and who have network to share them with. What you need are first adopters â€“ people who come to a new site, discover its benefits and are willing to share it.

Enabling this group is a difficult task â€“ if you get pushy and make things all about contests and rewards, youâ€™ll drive people away. At the same time, you do want to help build the viral effort by providing things like profile inserts, methods of building networks on your site to encourage sub-communities as well as other features and tools that pertain to your individual siteâ€™s needs.

The end goal is to get your site to be so hot that people can't wait to tell others about and the people they tell immediately join and continue to spread the word. Once you have people telling others and building your traffic, you need to keep them engaged with the site so they continue to come back, continue to use features and tools and engage more and more people to join.
