Whats the best strategy? Do you target general keywords or more specific keywords on google?
General keywords get more searches but are harder to rank high for. Specific Keywords are easier to rank higher for but do not produce the high amount of searches. I've found more success with specific keywords. How about you guys?

    Hey there,

Well, unless you can rank very well for a general keyword, you should stick with more specific keywords.

For instance, it would be hard ranking for "real estate", but not so hard for "michigan real estate", and even easier for "holland michigan real estate".

The more specific you get, the less traffic you get.

However, the traffic you do get is better for you because they search for a more specific key phrase.

    Thats my two cents.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

both are good, but I prefer long-tailed KW because people searching this KW are potential buyers so if you get a specific KW ranked, it might not help you more on traffic but it will give more conversion percentage than those broad KW.

I agree its difficult to get top rankings for the general keywords but its not impossible. I made my client's website ranked at 4 position in google for the keyword "Fireworks"... Yes you read the right statement, only "fireworks". Fireworks was very competitive keyword and I had to work very hard for this and the website got more than 5 lakhs hits on 4th of July... Isnt Amazing ...???

General keywords give you more traffic but difficult to achieve and specific keywords are easy to achieve but they cant give you that much traffic ... So the decision is yours

But never choose all general keywords, go for some specific keywords also, only choose 1-2 general keywords (most targeted) and do whatever you can to promote them like Discussion Forms, Article Submissions, Blogging, Social Bookmarking, Link Building, Blog Promotion etc.etc....

erm.. why not own them all?

For me, often the decision is based on a potential ROI for a given term Snagging rankings for terms that produce little in the way of traffic/conversions can be time/money thrown out the window.

A balance of 'money terms' and popular/targeted 'long tail' terms works best really. Here's some more ramblings on Keyword Research

do you mean target or major keyword from minor keyword..
Well for me, better to have it both. Make sure that your major keyword has lot of searches a month. Yes major KW is harder to rank but that's one of our tasks as SEO. I have a competitive KW and in two weeks I got in first page of Google and now staring to rank in yahoo and msn.

It's good to target both but it depends on the competition among the keywords.. Sometimes it's hard to compete in using general keywords because it's broad in topic than the specific ones.. IMO, the best thing to do is to begin with specific KWs then if succeeded, go for more competitive KWs..

Choose mix (general and specific) keywords and promote them with off page optimization .......
