    Hello,

I've seen thousands of webmasters having directories and many working very much on their directories very well. Many have general and others have niche directories. :)

I am asking this completely to those who are related to Paid Directories -

    - Do you have both general and niche directories?
    - If yes, which gets you more earnings or paid listings?
    - If you have niche directories, which niche gives you the best earnings? like business, health etc.
    - How do you promote your niche directory? By submitting to directories or buying links from sites of the same niche?

Please answer these as they would help me getting to know how good niche directory business goes and how people work on them. :)
Hoping to get the answers from all the big and small directory owners. :D

And i am placing a poll in this thread to check how many directory owners have general, niche or both kind of directories.

    Thanks.

I do have a niche directory, but I do not make much from it.
However, I do not promote it as I promote my general directory, so I cannot say for sure if niche of general would make you more.
I'd say general directories are still better money makers, but this might change in the future.

You can check the number of submissions to your general directory and maybe get a clue to which category would be the best for niche directory ;)

"Business" is probably the best, but there are so many "business directories", so you would be better off chosing the second best performing category.

I am actually asking about things like a few niche directories together competing with a single general directory.
Like a person owns health, game, business, webmaster directories and a general directory too.. all those niche directories together get more earnings or still the general is better?

Hmmm, that would be really hard to answer.
Promotion is one of the most imporant parts for a web directory, so my guess is that properly promoting that many niche directories would be too hard.
I am pretty sure you would make more promoting one general directory 8 hours a day, than promoting 8 niche directories 8 hours a day.

And think about the money you would have to spend to get high PR for all those niche directories.

I have both niche and general.

My General directories earn more in terms of submission. Though my niche earns more from g ads. Though my general dirs doesn't have anything coming from G ads.:D

I had a few niche directories but also included lots of general categories, the general categories got submissions and the niche ones got very few. I think you can charge more per submission for an established niche directory but it will take a long time to start making money. It is a bit of a double edged sword because without money coming in you have to spend money out-of-pocket for promotion.

My most recent niche directory is directoryoffun.com and I had a nice custom template coded for it but I have had very few submissions, it does not have a page rank yet so I am guessing another 5 months or so until I start getting steady submissions.

Bottom line is that niche directories are a longer-term and more costly investment than general directories but the pay-off can be really big after 12-18 months.

Niche with general attached -- allows me to focus on the niche, but also allow general submissions... (although I don't have anything like the time I really should devote to my directory)

I have both general and niche directories. Both seem pretty even in terms of earnings but both of my directories are fairly new so that could change as they mature.

ATM - I have 4 general directories (3 visible, one invisible as I'll show it only after PR update:D -still it gets 4/5 uniques per day:eek:)

I have 2 nice domains for niche directories -- one for real estate --one for adult.(Hope Malcolm gets his adult BULLS to PR5/6 by that time to gimme me some site-wide:p).

I planned to launch them during this update --but there is so much work to do:eek: for developing these 4 directories -I am only targetting their launch in September.

I have both, my niche gets a lot more search engine traffic and makes money mainly on advertising as it is a free directory.

My main general directory is fairly new but just now starting to earn money on submissions which is a welcome sight after all the money spent mod'ing, skinning and promoting... :)

    Hello...

A niche directory has its moments but not much more then that..

A general directory can do everything a niche directory can if you add the catgories to it so... and it offers more functions

    thx
