So, I have always had issues with half of the people I talk to say that I price my domains too high, while the other half say they are quite cheap for the quality. I usually do three things in order to figure out prices: 1. Searches and popularity; I check to see how popular the search item is (for keyword domains), and see if there is anything new in the news making the value go up. This is my most important tool when deciding the price. If it has tons of exact match searches, it is obviously going to bring in a lot of traffic (combined with decent SEO). 2. Estibot; I will get lynched for this, but I usually do it to see how in tune I am with their valuations. Also, I like to see some of my domains getting a high valuation on estibot, as I have gotten many replies saying "but Estibot values your domain much lower", so there are people that want to buy my domains based on that price. 3. My personal experience; being in the business as long as I have, I kind of get the feeling of when there are ups and down depending on the type of domain name I am marketing. When I get tons of inquiries for a certain domain, it tells me something good is happening or about to happen; especially if they are end-users! 4-ish: This one is for those domains I am totally fixated with, and people will value things differently depending on their needs/wants. This is usually how I go about pricing my domains (#2 is really just for curiosity). What do you all do to appraise your domains? I'd love to hear your input to see what else I can do to more accurately price my domains.
I always roll my eyes when someone says estibot is completely useless. I wouldn't ever value someone's domain based on that, but there's times I've bought some because of it...too some extent...because some buyers actually like a "straight-forward" answer. You're one of the first to actually say that out loud lol. People are usually this way...or that way about it. I buy what I like, and trust my instincts. That's really all the appraisal I need lol. I only speculate in things I like, because at the end of the day, I'd want domains that I want to renew, and if they never sold, I'll always be more than happy to develop them. I see a lot of the shit some of those members are (speculatively) registering over at Name Pros lol, gawwwdddd. It's like a pissing contest over there.
Haha, I totally agree with you. I only register domains I like or I know will have/add value in the present or future. I'm not only a domain seller, but also a developer, so I can see both perspectives. This can be a double edged sword though, since I will get at many times low ball offers for great domains, and their reasoning behind the low offer just ... pisses me off. I tend to lean toward facts on the domain, as well as personal experience. Glad to know I'm not the only one out there that uses their own exp. to price domains.
They are worth what the market will pay for them, don't expect a quick flip if you are asking end user prices
This is true. I am more of a developer, but I do sell a few domains each month just to boost income. This allows me to do both low pricing, as well as the high end-user pricing. I sometimes get one or the other, just depends on the person, the domain, and how much the market thinks its worth. It is a waiting game when it comes to end-users though.
It time consuming but let it run on net while your domain will get a value but with good content it will be Gold priceless!
