General help and advise needed

Hey people. I'm pretty much new to the whole internet marketing and SEO business.

I have small previous experience in creating websites, photoshop design and using Wordpress. Around a year ago I did a bit of blog writing for a PR5 rated iPhone blog and really enjoyed it. I then created my own blog, adsensed it, created my own custom theme but it didn't really kick off too well, brilliant experience though.

Now a year later I'm pretty bored and would love to get back into it. I'm looking at taking a whole different approach though this time round and have a few questions I'm hoping a few of you can help me with.

So my plan is to create a technology blog, Wordpress based. I've already purchased the domain, created a logo and got we space hooked up.

The few questions I do have are:

Would it be OK for me to backlinks the site before it even goes active?

Would you Reccomend the Thesis theme for the amount it costs? Primarily for the SEO features or are there newer better themes out now? (Seen a lot of 'responsive ones)

Do backlinks raise your PR rank? So I'm guessing it should be good to actually backlinks it before it goes active?

Isthere any other general advise you'd give me?

My aim is not to make money but to build a great site with professional quality design and content and gain a high PR ranking. It's all for my personal development and experienced.

    Thank you

    >>> You need to have the site up, with at least a few pages, before you build links to it since you would be building links for your individual pages to get them to rank.

Would you Reccomend the Thesis theme for the amount it costs? Primarily for the SEO features or are there newer better themes out now?

    >>> I have not used the Thesis theme but from what I've read, it is highly recommended.

Do backlinks raise your PR rank? So I'm guessing it should be good to actually backlinks it before it goes active?

    >>> Backlinks help to raise your PR but good content also does that's why you need to have your site up and active before you promote it.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Here are answers to your questions. Hope they help you.

    1. No, I wouldn't recommend that. If you start building backlinks, there is a chance that Google spiders would crawl your site, and they'll end up on a blank site with no content. Google absolutely hates that, as you might know from the recent updates. So, post some articles on your site (preferably long articles of 1000+ words) and then create backlinks to those posts and the home page.

    2. Yes, I've heard good things about the theme. Personally, I use the Genesis theme, and I like it (but that's my preference).

    4. From what I read on your post, you have experience in technical stuff. So, your niche selection is perfect for you. Just write stuff that you know about and try creating backlinks naturally. Don't try to over-complicate or over-think things. I wish you all the best. :)

    Thanks for your reply :)

So plan so far is just to write for a good 3-6 months without any backlinking. I've looked into Genesis but I think Thesis might do me better for like a 3rd time blog site creator.

Thanks again I'll let you know how I get on :D

Start writing content and do backlinking at the same time. Your pagerank only depends on backlinks and not the content of your site.

How would you say I go about backlinking? Like buy a bunch of links? When you do buy them are they for life or like you pay monthly?

Always have quality content on your site before you do any backlinking. Provide fresh content to your blog daily and you'll be surprised how you'll get backlinks without any effort. Content is your first priority.

If a visitor visited your site from a backlink you created and they arrived on a blank site, do you think they would come back? They probably wouldn't. Now if they came to your site and found some nice content, you bet they probably would come back.

    Content, Content, Content.

While backlinks do help boost page rank, content has a lot to do with it as well. Backlinks can bring users to your site, but without quality content, they will leave your site and never come back. This contributes to a high bounce rate and little to no conversion. Google looks at relevance and content as well, not just links.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Content, content, content, but what if no one turns up to read the content? links are equally important, not just to drive traffic to your site but to also move you up in the searches. There are a gazillion services that sell backlinks, Or you can take the time to find blogs/forums related to your site and comment thoughtfully - leaving a link of course!
