This GBuy seems to me more like a Google powered merchant account for processing credit cards, then payment processor for masses.

Yes PayPal suck, but StormPay sucks even more.

I'm all for Google creating GBuy . PayPal doesn't support my country.

Competition is always good and nobody forces you (yet) to use google's gbuy.

Only good things can come from competition with Paypal. Lower fees....easier integration....less shady business practices....who knows.

I'm pretty sure ALL countries will be accepted into google's program, like adsense.. this way, it will gain high popularity in no time (unlike google talk, which is pretty useless because of all big IM programs that have been present for a long time -- Y!M, MSN, AIM etc)

I haven't heard any specific details or believable rumors, but looking at the whole paypal / gbuy situation from the back-end, I think that google is quickly going to hit some of the barriers that paypal has always been dealing with.

Visa and MasterCard Interchange are going to limit how low any fees are going to be for gbuy customers. Visa and MasterCard wont negotiate for even Walmart, so I don't think google is going to be any exception.

The other problem that paypal has encountered is processing with other countries. There are many more fees involved when businesses are not in the US or a few other countries. Fraud is a very large concern in many of these countries as well. Fraud and these additional fees are not going to change. Take into account major barriers between many banking systems in some countries and you have a whole mess of problems with no easy solution.

At best guess I think gBuy is going to be available for US and maybe a few other countries. I don't want to put a damper on anyone, but there are factors that are unavoidable. I think that google will absolutely do their best to allow any person in any country to use the new gBuy system, but it just doesn't seem possible, at least from the start.

Hopefully I am wrong on this but I don't see any other way for the system to start.

On a positive note: Even if the prices of gBuy are the same or even slightly higher than paypal, one thing certain, is that there is no way for their customer service to be worse than paypal. Paypal also charges for P2P transfers which costs paypal nothing but they still charge the same as they would for a credit card. This is where paypal makes the most money. If google would make free or very cheap p2p transfers, they would have a huge advantage over paypal.

Paypal definitely needs some good competition and there is no one other than google that I can think of that can give them a run for their money.

why do you think gbuy isn't going to be available for most countries? just because paypal can't handle frauds and bans whole countries cause of it (which by the way doesn't even slow it down), that doesn't mean that GBuy will be the same; I'm looking at AdSense.. and I'm sure many people try to.. exploit the system.. and you don't see google banning countries or anything, and they have a hell of a security system (by that I mean very good).. I actualy didn't hear anyone exploiting AdSense and getting away with it (unlike PayPal)

edit: furthermore, Google has teams all over the world (including romania btw), so I don't think they're gonna leave these countries out
