I wouldn't say fast; but I think that eventually they will be treated as equals...

Then our children will think it's weird that some ignorant people used to try and keep them from having equal rights; just as we look back at the black civil rights movement of the mid-1900's...

Obama says that he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Wow, I'm surprised this topic has come back from being buried pages and pages ago.
See, I don't see anything wrong with gay marriage. I can't believe there are so many
people on DP who think differently.

    Logical Fallacy: Appeal to Authority

Still waiting for an answer; are you gay? If not, how do you know being gay is a choice?

This thread must have made you a lot of cash on the revenue sharing :D

I'm not gay and I don't care if you are or not.

It's a common gay arguement to attempt to justify gay marriage and connect it to the gay lifestyle choice.

    But you stated:
How can you be sure of that if you're not gay? Are you just stating opinions and possibilities as fact?

Of course it's connected, they deserve equality... Benefits are related to marriage, and marriage is related to love... So just because a woman loves another woman, they shouldn't be allowed to receive the same benefits, just because some people think that's gross?

Children are in the interest of the State and that is why the State provides the benefits of marriage to the union of a man and a women.

What does love have to do with it?

Surprise, surprise, I think RP has a decent answer to this.

Remove any advantages to being married (tax advantages, treat all citizens, male/female, single/coupled the same) and who cares what private contracts (marrriage) that citizens participate in?

    The big stink right now seems to be from;

    religious nutbags
    homophobes

While the tax advantages remove the meat of the argument *(and basis for state regulation), it's up to those individuals to reconcile that fact that other people's business and lifestyle is none of their own.

Of course, some of the homophobic, religious or statist kooks in this forum will probably argue for the MORAL RIGHT of the STATE to be THEIR EXCLUSIVE TOOL to enforce MORALITY as they INTERPRET it.

Ok, so men and women that are unable to have children should not be receiving benefits either right? In order to be fair, people should be tested to see if they're able to conceive, if that's the reason gays aren't allowed to wed...

Sounds a little too much like eugenics to me. Next thing, we'll be breeding out undesirables, people who make bad art, loud and stinky farters, and humanity will lose all of its character...

A marriage is a union between a man and a women.

Your're trying to make something simple complicated.

No; you're trying to make it simple because that way gays can't marry, and for some reason you support that...

If it is as simple as that (man and woman) why were blacks and interracial couples not allowed to wed for so long? You never gave me a straight answer to that question...

I don't see how it can be a lifestyle choice. I have a gay friend who wishes every day that he were different.
The trouble and worries that gay people have such as telling their parents, and those that develop depression over it. I just don't see why someone who just "pick" this kind of lifestyle. It's not like being gay is easy, I mean gay couples are still fighting for rights.

I also had another gay friend who would look in the mirror and make sure that nothing he wore would signify to his parents that he was gay. He would not invite any male friends to the house for fear that his mother would find out. He used to make me buy his acne medication because he didn't even want the cashier to know that he could be gay. Why would he go through with hiding his true self to his parents and the paranoia involved just by choice?

My uncle is gay, I have two gay male friends. I do not consider myself homophobic. I think one big argument our government has against gays is of course insurance companies and employee rights. I mean our government caters towards employers, but when it comes to employees they could give a shit. I mean, for example I live in Indiana where they can just fire an employee for no reason. I mean, politicians are paid off by big business to vote against gay rights so they don't have to give extra benefits...
