Throwing away the router might not be a good idea...it's the piece of h/w which allows connecting sharing.

Explain the nature of your net connection, specifications and current setup in detail so that I may suggest something.

I get this internet thingy via this modem thingy via cat5, that cat 5 right now goes to my wan port of router , but i do not want router for use as d-link sucks :(. So i want this internet connection to be shared on my 2 beautiful pcs and hence wondering if this darn switch can be used or not or if its for something else. Got dynamic ips as everyone but its not dsl its Cable :)

No thingies that are coming in or out of your cable thingy are ever going to swamp the dlink thingy, so why bother thinging about changing thingies? :)

Typically cable modem providers only give you 1 dynamic ip per household. the only way to go from a cable modem to a switch and allow for multiple ip addresses, is to typically upgrade your service to a business service. This would allow multiple IP's assigned via dhcp (or better yet static, but that's pushing it) and could be used by a switch. However the per month charge on a personal versus business connection is usually extreme.

Even if you dont' like the dlink, you still need some sort of networking equipment that will act as a gateway for the 2 pc's (usually accomplished by a router).

    Get a linksys.
