I agree. The algo is better, the directory is cleaner, and I am fairly certain a great many people use it. A great many more will use it once (if ever) Vista arrives.

That's because it doesnt sound good and concentrates on a variety of other stuff.
Half the people(the common surfers) I know, goto google because it sounds good ...and when they go their .. the only utility they find is the seach area ,,, and so they concentrate only on the search feature ...
whereas Yahoo/MSN have theri pages crapped with loads of links .. and so the people dunno what to do ...
Now since most of the surfers goto Google.com ...we techies/seo have to follow suit ;)
Hope you got my point ?

great point, the fact that google is mostly concentrated in the search and that has a clean home page is really important in my opinion.

As internet surfer, I like msn search results because it display not outdated search result. Unlike google sometimes their search result is out dated because of their sandbox.

Nothing like doing a search on google, going to the first site in the listings, and find out the site is no longer in existence, suspended by host company, or has a date shown of 2001.

One would think that google would fix it so that old sites would not be listed at all, or sites no longer found would not be listed.

The other strange thing is when you are searching for one keyword, and the top listings have that keyword shown, yet when one goes to the site, not a darn thing on the site that fits the keyword.

If you are worried about google watching you, don't install a browser with their toolbar.

I somewhat question this, lately they have been trying to do a thousand things at once most of which have nothing to do with search.

I cannot deny their innovations to the search engine world however, and they are a great company :)

That being said, I *rarely* goto google.com, yahoo.com or any search engine anymore with the integrated search box available within my browser and even many websites.

You can bet with the recent shmoozing between Sun and Google that Google will be releasing its' own OS with Google tech and open source squarely at the heart.

For MicroSoft to lose anything at all (afterall they really only stand to gain right now in search) they have to lose the Office Suite cash cow.

Expect MS to strike Google on search and expect Google to strike MS in the wallet by making Office upgrade paths (ala billions and billions of dollars) a thing of the past through offering Open Office preinstalled on the Google OS machines.

Google has brand trust. MicroSoft is fighting to keep theirs.

Google will destroy Gates and company's ability to force Office Suite upgrade paths by delivering Open Office either as an AJAX web service or bundled on a new OS offering.

That will sting far greater than any ad revenue bite MS can take away from Google.

Also when you consider the moves Google has been making to expand areas of both indexing and search (and ad placement potentials) I think they are well on the way to being pretty well buffered against any move by MS.

Google has brand trust for now, but just look at how the perception of Google in the webmaster/web publisher/owner/ and SEO industry has changed dramatically over the last couple of years. A once squeaky clean image has been replaced by suspicion and antagonism brought about by their smoke and mirrors style management and arrogant disregard for the community who put them where they are now.

This alternative perception can and will (IMO) filter through to the general public, eventually.

Imagine if one fine day, you goto msn.com and all you find is a clean home page like google ... in which all you are supposed to do is ... enter the text to be searched and search it, with the big MSN logo on top ...
Yahoo has already done it and looks like a rip off google...
