All religions seem to prohibit gambling publicly but behind closed doors are happy to make money from it - so is gambling really immoral?

Religion is immoral. Why would you think gambling is immoral? Because some guy 2000 years ago said it was?

If you trade stocks then you are gambling. If you make any investment you are gambling.

Tell me something, if it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get in heaven, why do the religious care if you blow your money away? Is Jesus some kind of financial adviser now?

The church and state think gambling is immoral because priests and bureaucrats are essentially the same thing, lonely people who are bored with their life and seek power by intruding on the private lives of others.

Lets put whether religion is immoral to a side and go back to what I was talking about which is if religious organisations say its wrong but then without us knowing they make money from it then can it be bad?

Is Judaism the only religion that is fine with gambling? If yes then what are the gambling addiction rates among practicing Jews?

    Chaos Trivia,

The text you game me is in past tense.
As I said, once, gambling was not seen as a positive thing in Judaism, but a form of theft.
The attitude has changed. Nowadays, It is not something considered to be very honorable or encouraged, but its not a crime.
You know, better not, but if you do: nevermind.

In Israel, it is not the religious law but the state law that forbids gambling. The mafia runs a 4$ billion gambling industry.
There are two state-run gambling monopolies in Israel: one is for lotteries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mifal_HaPayis, the other one is a sports bookie (http://www.toto.org.il/).
Both monopolies invest the profits back in the society. Practicing jews always take part in both.

Also, I was a regular in Switzerland in the local casino once I lived there, and orthodox jews from the small community in Zürich that come and play was not a rare sight. :)

Gambling is prohibited coz its a one side favoured business. Any business where the profits and loses are on both the sides are legal.

You could say the same thing for banking, should it also be illegal?

Worthless site, I stopped reading after the first paragraph, "Gambling most definitely is focused on the love of money and undeniably tempts people with the promise of quick and easy riches."

No, it definitely doesn't for one thing. For another, that's his opinion, not the Bible's, and it's a shame that people actually listen to morons like this who make up this stuff.

Gambling can be done for fun, or as a thrill for thrill-seekers, or as an investment. Others can be tempted by the promise of quick and easy riches, but that's their moral problems, not anyone else's.

Do you work for money? Why? You must be a sinful SOB who has a love of money if you're doing something to get money, because that's just the only rational conclusion.

It's a fact that religion in general is one of the most fierce opponent of gambling.

Could be his interpretation/ opinion, should discount it straight away

I did point that out in my first post

I think the whole world is interesting, not one place.

Banking is divided into retail banking, (putting and taking out into an account) investment banking, (which is the gambling element) so you need to be specific and not all investment banking is gambling. One of my Muslim friends told me a month ago that sharia banking is less risky, he showed me a video but Im not an economist so i couldn't fully tell you what i think of it.

deepeele, i was responding to the claim that gambling is a "one-side favored business" (even though all business favors one side ).

Retail banking is just as one-sided as gambling books.

Well, actually, the bible doesn't actually mention gambling directly. Most of the scriptures referenced when it comes to gambling are taken out of context or aren't specifically related to gambling. There are scriptures that talk about how we are to be good stewards with the income we receive. However, you can gamble and remain a good steward.

The problem arrives when you begin to put gambling before taking care of your family. And it is a fact that there are out people out there who are so addicted to gambling that they easily fit into this category. It is no different than being a drunkard or addicted to other forms of drugs.

Interest system is prohibited in religion. On the other hand, lending money and getting extra from it if there is profit and if loss also bear the loss. that is the rule in religion. but interest only get extra money does not consider there is profit or loss. that is why it is burden on people and that's why its prohibited in religion.

To hell with your systems and religions.

Greed is good. Excessive greed is bad.

    Simple.

Gambling is fine. Excessive gambling is bad.

    Simple.

Murder is in the name of god fine. Excessive murder is also fine in the name of a deity.

Wait... that's religion's view. Huston to Baby Jesus, we have a problem.
