    Viral Marketing

Notice how when you sign up, you can enter your msn or other instant messaging account details to see if any other friends are signed up? Then the following screen asks if you'd like to invite them and the chain continues.

Facebook did it by initially targeting college kids. I think that's the way to do it, find a niche and promote your network to that group, then spread out of that target group.
But starting a business, expecting to get big, and not expecting to spend on advertising or promotion in some way, shape or form, is just daft.

There are many way to recruit people to your myspace clone for instance, you can pay member that recruit their friend to join your site as now doing by yuwee if not mistaken.
Other than that, you can buy some lead for it.All this is about money,if you willing to spent, then more and more people willing to join your site coz they get the benefit

Its a difficult market to get started in. You should offer something different, try a niche social community such as a specific hobby or career.

Add some Contact Importer type Plugin! The only way to market a social network is VIRAL MARKETING!

Using a contact importer on your website will be the best solution.
    Try tell-all-friends.com

Instead of going for Paid Solutions you can try this opensource contact importer from openinviter.com

Your opensource solution is fine. I have tested it but it does not have an admin interface to manage the content and to see the stats. Do you know other open source solution with these features?

If you've already good network in a similar sites, it will be little easier for you to get members to your own.

im also working on an social networking site.
and been thinking a while on how to market this best.
Ive talked a lot to people to get to know more..
They have adviced me to use this viral marketing.. though, i know hyves (which is a dutch social marketing site.. 'works' with open inviter) they dont like it when you do this..
So from that i conclude that myspace and facebook dont like it when you do it.. and will ask you to stop it.
Thats why you will have to change your ip of where you send your mails from a lot. Roulate them.. (dont know if thats the exact term/spelling)
And sending that much mails will take a very good server: hosting..

But since they dont like it when you do this.. is it still legal?
