I get people submitting articles to my site all the time that have nothing to do with my site at all. I wonder if I got listed in one of these directories somehow..
I must have too, I get the same article submission all the time and they are never even close to the topic of my site. I've got a new "article submission" venture going here. If you know anything about forums, SEO, web design, etc go ahead and write a short article for submission. The submission section is at the top of my forum so it gets crawled regularly and gets a fair amount of page views. It's a moderated section of the forum too, so it won't get diluted with a bunch of garbage/spam posts. I've only got two articles there at the moment so any submissions will be reviewed and approved right away.
I placed a request for articles in this thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=427&highlight=fame+fortune. My only criteria is that there is some Internet connection in the article. Other wise all topics are welcome.
I think I saw the same thread you did. So I promptly went off and submitted the half dozen or so white papers on my site to several places. The ones that have posted the articles are all PR0 and have generated an dazzling one visitor Of course as someone else here said, every little link help!

I'm not sure about the article "clearing house" sites, but I've had excellent results from submitting articles and white papers to themed portals for my industry.
I've received a few hits from the articles I've posted around the net but the biggest benefit I think was the links I recevieved. In some cases, I have the only out going link on the page. Also check out: Article Submission Sites http://www.most-relevant-links.com/articles
The results depend in many ways on who picks up and publishes the article. My Google PageRank article was picked up and published by SitePro News. I probably had 50 emails directly as a result of that article and to date have signed 4 new SEO clients as a result. So articles can really work for you.
Is the amount of hits you get really worth it? I have about 10 articles I can submit to these sites. Just not sure if its worth it?
This thread is quite old but it still holds true. Article Submission can be VERY worth it. Its about distribution and a great article can generate a lot of links which translates into a lot of visitors. I wouldn't bother with the initial list as sites like articlecity are no longer fully functioning. My suggestion is to always only submit to the top sites: www.goarticles.com www.ezinearticles.com www.articledepot.co.uk (I'm a bit biased) These sites get 99% of the distribution and are more serious about making sure your article is used correctly. No, because the idea of duplicate content is based primarily on the page as a whole. Not only do the submitted sites have ample navigation, ads, etc to bring down this "dup" penalty but the sites that use your article are sure to also. I have seen some of my articles fill the top 10 on less competetive keywords without a single page being dropped. If duplicate content was that strict we would never get a page indexed. Instead we have had around 8,000+ articles indexed in the last month and a half alone.
Okay, I'm beginning to see why this is so good! I've just submitted seven articles from my site, and already they have been published on three other sites! Not only do I get backlinks, but I get traffic comming through!
