    by having the compression in your site, your server presents the compressed version to the search engine, and hence they can index more amount of pages in the same time.

    To my knowledge there is no downside. The benefit is that your pages will load faster, page load speed is metric used in ranking SERPS (a pretty unknown metric, but one nonetheless). All in all compression is GOOD!
