I think in the future, it will be tougher and tougher. Google is implementing many bots to catch spammers and creating a lot of ways to stop non-quality links.
I think the future will bring foward a two-tier class of Internet Marketer in the future. Initial organic ranking versus reputational and experiential long-term ranking. For an online asset to succeed organically I think there will need to be a lot more creative content and a better online experience for the visitor. I have a feeling there will be a major shift away from content search relevancy to social feedback and visitor endorsement rating. More focus on popularity and time on site using raw analytics data and social media backlinks. I think a new site will rank as it does now when fresh content is published but then the popularity and interaction of that material will be vital for sustained ranking and if the material bounces the ranking will quickly disappear. So the days of scraping content, low-grade backlinks and spinning will be over in favour of popular genuine content and time on site. There are so many low grade, automated and informationally barren websites out there now, something has to change I suppose. It makes our life a lot more difficult not knowning what the future brings, especially as Google is constantly re-inventing itself.
Content will remain a valuable asset used for determining a site’s relevance and ranking. The Panda update has already made a big dent in this arena. But one difference down the road is to look for more details in content. It’s not about simply writing longer posts, but more about giving more attention to more details. Longer posts can have an advantage when Google bots are indexing. Usually, longer posts are deemed more relevant or important.

I think in future seo work will get lot tougher than ever. And only one site will need a lot of seo work to bring it's high page rank. Then it will be impossible to make multiple sites for the owners.
See, no body can predict the future. Not even the single person on this planet can tell you about strategies that can be employed in future. You don’t know the upcoming algorithm, new guidelines that may come in... So its better to focus on current strategies to get good rankings.
Content will be more important than before. You should get few backlink but quality in term of website authorithy and value content. A bunch of backlink overnight is old technique and will be penalized soon.
