now after release of Joomla 1.0.12; Joomla team says it : So there will be no new version of this series and unless a critical vulnerability is discovered. At this time i dont think many people are using Joomla 1.5. I hav't tried that yet. some days ago i had seen that there was a separate template gallery for JOomla 1.5 templates and they had mentioned that templates of previous vcersion can't be used on the newer one. I just want to know from those who have tested version 1.5 that does it have functionality to import a joomla 1.0.x site into it??? and is it able to use the templates of older version. I had started it fromk Joomla but those people who had migrated from Mambo to Joomla can tell how easy/difficult it was to transfer a site having 1000+ pages!! and also will 1.5 support all the available components/modules/mambotes which are available for 1.0.x
Maybe you should post this question also in forum.joomla.org. By this way, you will have 2 sources of answers.
Hello: Nobody is using joomla 1.5 yet because still beta, they strongly recommend not to use it for other than testing purporses. Joomla developers say that there is a way to migrate from 1.0.x to 1.5. I did upgrade from Mambo to Joomla, and the proces was not that complicated, only a few steps: -backup, backup, backup -move your old site files to a new, provisory folder -upload via FTP the new joomla files -copy over all the mambots, modules, components and templates that you are using - open config.php and put the info to connect to the database That was it... not much pain. I think that with the new joomla it can be a little more complicated... it seems that the old templates DO NOT WORK with joomla 1.5 the same thing happens with A BIG PERCENTAGE OF modules and components. Hopefully, by the time they release a stable version of joomla 1.5, developers of the extensions have already compatible versions released. Still, you'll be able to use the same database, so it doesn't matter if your site has 10 pages or 1000 pages... the pain will be the template and the modules/components. My 2 cents.
I ve been using Joomla a lot to say that there is no end coming. The final version before 1.5 is a great version to work with. My experience says that commercial websites will have great difficulties in upgrading. They ll find many problems with their 3rd party components that have installed throughthe years.
I'm really looking foreword to Joomla 1.5. This could be make or break for Joomla, the same which happend with Mamboo. The problem with the Joomla 1.5 is that there are going to be a lot of pain transfering the old databases to the new site. At the joomla forum they states that it's not going to be a problem, but there are other Joomla developers that have stated that at the moment there are none easy way of transfering the site from exsisting to 1.5 Joomla. And why is it so? Because the new Joomla verson use other tables then the existing one. Not sure if I'm able to explain it better, since I'm not a programmer. When it comes to templates the biggest different will be the use of: <jos-code> instead of <mos-code>.
As a joomla developer myself, I have tested the new Joomla 1.5 beta and been installing official nightly builds a few times every week, just to see what's new. Bugs seem to be going away and new features added at times but the process seems a bit slow. Too slow I should say considering that the 1.0.x series is about to be dumped from what it looks like. Anyway, I consider the 1.0.12 to be mature enough so I can be happy with it and as long as security vulnerabilities are taken care of, I'm ok with it until their new version goes stable. The step towards the new generation of this software is a bit high, so I don't personally think there will be a seemless upgrade process. More than that, I think there will be a vBulletin - like software development. Talking about the vB 2 series that are still kept up to date security wise. The mos-to-jos conversion they have been working on is not that big deal to the end user afterall. I would not have spent that much time on it unless there are mambo vs joomla disputes they had to end by changing their code. What I have to admit here is that the new Joomla will surely suck some of my time studying the new coding rules introduced and stuff like that. All-in-one I can live with it. A community that supports the best CMS out there should be loyal to what developers go through. That's what I've been doing for the past almost 5 years of my dedication to Mambo-now-Joomla.
I couldn't agree more. I'm just sitting and wondering how much time those developers spend on making this CMS systems. Imagine If I had to pay a programmer for this solution. My best advice is to upgrade to 1.012 and just leave it there, unless there are some security issues. Well I know that I'm not going to upgrade to Joomla 1.5 long after it's release.
