Full Virus Scan takes FOREVER!

I'm in the middle of a full scan of my other computer. It has been running about 7 hours now, and is still on the first of two hard drives, and has scanned about 1.5 million files so far. Just setting it to run overnight is not really a solution, because it takes longer than that. Any recommendations?

I'm at 2.3 million files scanned and still waiting. The scan uses so much cpu that the computer is too slow to use.

What the heck do you HAVE on that drive, David? Is it feasible to disallow certain file types from the scan?

Heuristic scanning might be enabled, which usually takes longer. Although, I've never heard of it taking that long...

However, given that you have well over 1 million files could have something to do with it.

Good point. It could be scanning within archive files. Try removing file types such as: .zip, .tar.gz, .lhz, etc.

By the way, which AV program are you using?

Listen...if you have over 2 million files being scanned you've got tons of temporary internet files being scanned. Anytime a full scan is being done, you should always delete your temporary internet files and cookies to speed up the scanning process. Also delete anything in your recycle bin.
