hope you go for WS FTP-pro, already recommended several times in this thread, it is stable, reliable, using it happily, never showed any flaws:D

I have used Cute FTP for some time and now Cute FTP Pro. Never had a problem. Don't use it very often, but never had it cut off a file. Sounds like connection problem to me too.

Being admin of an ftp site, I can say that IE or IE disguised as Windows Explorer operates differently than "normal" ftp clients. IE takes at least 2 connections to accomplish anything and it never lets go of the connection - at least until a reboot or they disconnect from the web. I regularly see 6 to 10 connnections from one IP and all are idle except one. This isn't multi-threaded downloading, it's sloppy handling of connections. Terrible software.

Used to use IE most of the time. Had a problem and my hosting company strongly recommended SmartFTP. That seems to work well.:)

CuteFTP 4.3....I tried a newer version but didn't like it. I really like the cutehtml that is integrated with 4.3. I am just very used to it and don't like anything else.

If you're not satisfied with CuteFTP....then use SmartFTP, which is free (even though it says 30-day evaluation, you can still keep it). Here is the download link from Download.com:

It is fairly easy to use and there really isn't anything confusing or complicated when you are trying to set it up. It is pretty good if you own multiple sites, because you can have different tabs and such.
