Frustration with Google

It is very frustrating that Google doesn't consider conversions when deciding what ads to demote based on performance. I had a few ads that converted well, but were taken down because they didnt get as many clicks. I guess traffic cant be too qualified...

How is google going to know what ads are converting for you?

Adwords users can setup conversion tracking in their account. That way google can know which ads convert. I have had the same issues too. Ads that had a conversion rate of over 30% have been taken off because of their new quality system.

This made many publishers to loose their revenue?

Except that conversion code is optional and is not monitored by Google. It is very simple code that can be wildly innacurate.

If they were going to base it on conversions, they would have to develop a much more intrusive system.

I would never share conversion info w/ Google.

    To what are you referring?

    I think he actually means

"Low performing ads were disabled despite the fact that I was getting a conversion rate of 30%"

Google doesn't monitor conversion percentages and they certainly wouldn't disable a keyword because your conversion rate was too high

Google doesnt care for conversions; they don't make any more money if you convert 1% or 100%. Clicks are all that matter to them.

    Great point lorien ;)

And also for all they know a conversion is $1.00 so saying it will drive away advertisers isn't even a fair statement

I will also say, they know themselves that conversion rates are many times wrong. If they started using them for analysis, I would just put my conversion code on my landing page in a rotating script.

I could then fake any conversion percentage between 0%-100%

I've seen sites that put the conversion script on the landing page. Back when it was an image, it was weird to see, but I guess they wanted to make sure the click really landed LOL

Of course Google only gets paid based on clicks so they have no incentive to care about conversions. The point is that google has incentives in their current model that are contrary to the advertiser's. I want qualified traffic that converts well, Google wants to send me as much traffic as possible without regard to conversions.

I remember reading somewhere in TOS that they even punish you with $5 if you don't have enough clicks... Am I right?

No. They dont. I have ads that get like a click a month, but never been penalized for that.
