frustrated :(

I'm relatively new to SEO, however for the past few months I've been absorbing every piece of information like a sponge.

I have a couple of sites, and I can't seem to figure out how people get thousands of backlinks? Let's assume they are not link baiting (because they are clearly made-for-adsense sites), so how does one get thousands of backlinks?

I bought SEO Elite (which is almost useless), Keyword Elite (only half the stuff works properly), and IBP (which actually works). I've been finding sites that are related and sending out emails to website owners, yet I have less than 1% success rate (meaning if I send out 100 pre-screened, targeted emails to quality related sites, I will only get 1 link or less). This takes hours and hours of extremely boring routine work and the result is very frustrating.

I tried article submit and downloaded article submitter, put my article on 50 websites and only few got noticed by search engines.

Right now I'm trying to submit my sites to as many directories as I can find, hopefully this will help. Also I joined LinkVault, so I'm going to see if that helps too.

What can I do to get many links to my website?

    You can buy them :)
Many users here are selling quality links at fairly good prices.

Yes submit to as many directories as possible, the more backlinks you have the more "visible" you will be on search engines.

Concerning article, I don't know how much you have written yet, but try writing a lot or articles, 4-5 weekly after some weeks you'll see the change.

Building backlinks can be a painful process but it has to be done. I 100% know how you feel when sending out emails to hundreds of webmasters only to get 1% success rate.

Start building links with directories which is also a boring process but it needs to be done. Take a look at http://www.707directory.com/General/ and go through each directory. Before submitting to a directory I check to see if it has Page rank, it doesnt list spam or illegal site and it does not use the no follow rule.

I'll go for free one way links first.

Stay active on DP, and once you meet the requirements, you can add the links to your signature, which will help build up some backlinks ;)

Building back links is a slow painful process
You can take a look at
    http://dir.w529.com/Niche-Directories/Directories/
Or take a look on my own "Directory of Directories"
    http://dir.w529.com
This is a list of directories that list directories
I use the software “LinkAssistant” for finding link partners
They have a Free demo try it.
    Best of Luck

Seems like you are totally new... and trying to soo hard to acheivement your Goal..... In dp forums... you will find many info here... you need good unique articles, directory submision... some related reciprocal links... better if one way links and then promote your sites here... and then in two or more weeks you will find more good results...

Well, duplicate links from same sites aren't going to be counted twice by the search engines (as far as I understand they count the links only from each individual website only once).

Or are you saying that other webmasters will use those articles on their own website? Is that the main purpose?

Email a webmaster who has a site in the same topic and ask them to exchange links.

I know how do you feel and you are not the only one.
First, beware when submitting to directories.
Niche directories - the results on google for "resources my niche" are good place, but some directories are FFA and you might get attached to bad neighbour.

Probably you should try 3-way link exchange since you have more sites.

I would say that in general. Find your niche forum which does accept signature and take participation. After some time you will get some traffic. In my opinion, non webmaster related forums have members who click on signature links quite often. So if your website is about "online trading" find "online trading forum" and took participation. There you will have better CTR and ROI from your signature than here ;)

Also good idea. I think that you could get PR4 with as low as 200$ with outsourced link building. If you aren't in developing country it is really a bargain.
