I own and run a forum,, And can tell you that , Yes I will let posters have a link in their sig..

But can also tell you, that most forum owners keep a very close eye on this, and a post must have some value and be worth letting the poster keep his/her.. link/backlink..

I'm sure most forum owners will say the same...

Yes, it's good for life if it's on quality posts and the webmaster/moderators are happy with it; so being a valued member of a forum is better. However, but by life I don't mean yours, but the life of the forum. I have see many cases where a forum disappears from the interwebs taking your sig links with it.

Also this notion that sig links and blog posts provide quality backlinks is inaccurate. No link that you can add yourself is a quality link. Organic links, especially on authority sites, are quality links. That is not to say forum sig links and blog posts aren't useful, they are. Like every cent counts to makes up a dollar, every link counts regardless of it's quality.

Yes the links from blogs and forums are lifetime links as long as your forums account is alive and blog owners do not delete your comments. I have seen quite a few people are banned from forums like DP. So don't abuse the forum posting as well as blog commenting. Any spamming will endanger your link building efforts.

Forums are less prone to lose them however blogs loose "weight" over time - archiving and deletion of posts. Forums seem much better
