    Hello folks!

What is more important to keep your site ranking high (top 10) on Google? Adding fresh content? Or getting more backlinks?

Some say that one should leave the content untouched when you gain high SERP and work only on getting more backlinks. The other school of thought says that you gota keep on adding content and not worry too much about linkbuilding. I just want to see what the majority here thinks. I am also gona start a poll here. It'd be great if you guys could participate!

    Thanks!

On page content can only take you so far. IMO i think optimise the content and then keep building links until you get to #1 or as high as possible... and once there fresh focus on the content to keep your visitors coming back. Once you get high enough your backlinks will start to come naturally anyway

Mr Blonde is right on point. If you had SOME content but HAD to choose EITHER links OR content, I would say links, because content alone wont draw traffic, unless your content is so amazing that it goes viral in a BIG way, which is VERY unlikely.

If that's all you want, an obscure keyword will do the trick. I score #1 for my own name ... not really much of an accomplishment, though, and more important, it doesn't really help me at all.

Which brings us back to your question. If you're trying to sell something, you need a good product at a fair price, with photos that make your customers feel like this is exactly what they want, and some copy describing the product in a good light. If it's advertising, then you need content people will want to see or read, and that's tied in to get you decent AdSense ads.

Basically, whatever type of site you have, you need to set it up so that people don't just hit back as soon as they visit. And no amount of links will help with that. Which doesn't mean you need to change your site every day, or even necessarily every week. A balance is really what you need, but I've been growing my traffic steadily, spending about 65 % of my time on content and 35 % on publicity.

We know that Content is King. So if you want your site ranking high (top 10) on Google you should do both on-page optimization and off-page optimization consistently.

For me quality link is the king and content is queen...

To google content is not KING, quality links.....:) T
To yahoo and msn content is king....

    quoted from source.....

"What Google tries to determine is the relevance of a given piece of content to a keyword query. So, your content doesn't need to be great. It's more important, in terms of traffic and links, that your content is popular with the right people...."

"Some people say "content is king" when they mean that website content. I'd agree with that and add that none of that has anything to do with search engine rankings, and links are still king for SEO" ....:D :D :D

And on that note, search engine rankings have nothing to do with anything important if people click #2 instead of #1, or hit back as soon as they get to your site. To the logical extreme, links are a waste of time if you have no content.

Both content and link building are important components of SEO. We should continue both the process all the time. Of course adding fresh conten regular could help you get more natural links quickely.

I'll say fresh content. Well actually you have to work on both but if you intend to focus on one go with the fresh content.

Ok wow, that's great. Another thing, how often should the content change? Daily, a week, monthly? Any idea? Some people say you need to TEACH search engines when it comes to updates. How is that suppose to work and effect SERP?

Yes, they are equally important :)

The only way to enjoy permanent good ranking is to constantly upload content and link bait.

I think google give more points to quality backlinks but they also considered the relevancy of site content.

its not just the quality of content. the original question is about "Fresh content" vs. backlinks.

News sites for example update the page everyday, with RSS, you can encourage SEs to visit yours more often. This is another way to get ranked high in the SERP even though it may not last too long.

Having quality backlinks is more for a longer term ranking factor, as well as how Google initially determines the overall ranking in the SERP.

It's obvious that you should do both, but there is no point while G doesn't know your site and its rank, and you try to have quality content on it. I would get good backlinks first if the order must be emphasized.
