frequency of using h1 tags....good/bad?

i am obviously going to have my keywords within <h1> tags on my site, but if i have other less important keywords, should i put them in <h1> tags as well, or will that deminish the "strength" of my main keywords because i have so many h1 tags on one page?

    thank you in advance.

Don't overdo it with the h1 tags. It could trip the spam filters and then you'll be fighting to get back. Use h1 for main headings and h2 and h3 for anything else.

remember that you site has to also look good to the user....having a lot of <h1> tags will surly screw up the aesthetic of the page.

I think you misunderstood anyway. I didnt take it personally anyway :)

I was just stating I think you mislead him in thinking that he couldnt change the appearance of the header content.

You could disguide the header text in the middle of a sentance if you wanted.

I wouldnt suggest it anyway, but its poss.

It is hypothesized that at least some of the major search engines algorithmically dampen the H1 tag, especially if it is used more than once. As I wrote here, write your pages in verbose outline format. Verbose outline format refers to using H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 elements to create an outline (worthy of your 6th grade English teacher) and then using p elements to inject your paragraph copy.

I am curious about the best use of H1 tags as well. The way my site is set up is that the H1 tags are simply the site title. The H2 tag is the title of the article/ what the specific page is about. Here is an example of one of my pages using that format.

My question is, would it be better for SEO purposes to place the article title/topic of the individual page in the H1 tag and remove the site title (I do have the site title on the image in my header)?

Though I certainly do not want to overuse the H1 tag and trigger any type of spam filters.

Use <h> tags sparingly, in an hierarchical fashion and only where they're needed, especially <h1>. I usually use h1 once per page. as the title of the page and then forget about it.

The more h1 tags you use the less weight per word

Use only 1 H1 tag, and make it short, to the point, and as full of your keywords as possible... if you want to rank for Myspace Proxy, put your h1 as "Myspace Proxy"... don't make it "Your Free Myspace Proxy", because each extra word makes the h1 tag less relevant to the main keyword Myspace Proxy
