Would you apply for a job without ensuring that your application was well written, with proper grammar and punctuation and free from spelling errors?

Of course you wouldn't, and surely the same principle applies in DP?

I'm not saying that every post a person makes should be formal and boring but, if a writer is serious about gaining a commission to write an article for someone, then he/she should at least ensure that any posts within the relevant thread show off their skills as a writer. Those posts are their "job application", do you not agree?

Forum posts aren't even close to the same thing as a job application, unless it's specifically a post advertising your services. Forums are communities for networking and having discussions; not to necessarily showcase your writing abilities.

It's more important in a forum to demonstrate your expertise in the niche within you write. People pay more for that than someone who can simply follow grammatical rules. No one expects that forum posts are going to be as thoroughly proofread and edited as a piece of writing for a client. Whether or not you have something intelligent to say in places like DP is much more important in getting writing gigs than having grammatically correct posts. From there, if you're serious about being a writer, you would be linking in your sig to a professional portfolio, blog, or other more formal sample of your work for people to refer to before deciding to hire you.

I see what you're saying. I thought you were talking about all forum posts, but you really mean those posts made in response to a solicitation for writers.

As for those specific posts, I agree, they should be error-free. But, it shouldn't be that hard to say "I'm interested. See PM." without making any errors. :)

For what it's worth, I don't get on people for grammar issues when they're just talking in a forum. Yes, I even ignore grammar issues with the "writers" here. I expect people to be casual.

I agree that a post about services should be as top-notch as possible.

    And not something like:

"I be pro writher. 100% grammer correctiveness gurunteed."

My all-time favorite are the people who advertise here and say their work is Time magazine quality or similar. Let's see, you have no formal writing education and you haven't been published in a magazine like Time. Yeah, I can see the connection. :)

...and have never even read an issue of Time. I'm all for metaphors and analogies, but not blatant lies! :D
