Sorry this happened, you don't pay only after the provide project was to completed. You "create milestones", and release 100% payment after completion of the project. If the project meets is good, you paid.

There are many crooks who asking for money before you start work on a project. They ask you to send them money western union, an advance of 50%. After you send the money, he delete the name from website and create another account.

Freelancer basically provides an escrow service which for the most part is very secure and safe for both ends. I've actually seen the freelancer get the short end of the stick more often than the buyer. You should not have released the milestone payment before verifying the project has been completed to your specification. Also, you should check the feedback and history of past projects of any freelancer you hire, there are still scammers there since it technically costs nothing for them to join and become a "freelancer". Sorry it happened to you, better luck next time.

if the person has not started on your project, AND is not talking with you at all,and seeing as you have contacted freelancer, then your final option is to contact your bank to do a referral. Depending on things, you might need to file a police report, but this may depend on your local law, and where the person lives.

I do not understand why you would hand over that amount up front without seeing some sort of a milestone, nor do I understand what project a mentally handicapped person would want to make that would cost 2000 pounds.
I think that it is best that you find local companies (that may have overseas staff) that you can hire for your projects.

Never, ever, ever pay a freelancer prior to work. If the freelancer claims he can't start work until the money is released, walk away. There are a few others who will take the job. It sucks you have to wait a few more days to find the right person, but...
I've had freelancers ask me to pay first because they have to pay a salary, taxes or whatever. Don't do it. I 've also had freelancers who know they won't do the work ask me to send the money, cancel the job and when it is canceled they'll forward me back my dough so they don't lose their rating. Screw that.... you will never see a dime.
I've always stuck to the milestone rule and have never been burned. I miss Rentacoder...

Hi, I'm feeling sorry for you.

    1. Contact your bank ASAP and ask to freeze transaction, sometimes they need 12h-24h to make a transaction so it's possible that this is not too late.

    2. Go to Skype support, then:
    Get more help>
    You will need to login>
    Select issue>
    Select a contact method>
    Send email
Send them email and ask how they can help you (f.e. track down the computer if he didn't change his IP).

    3. Also ask from Freelancer his IP.

    4. After that, take every evidence you have and go to Police.

    Hope something will help.

Freelancer.com, one of the best forum to work with. It is suggested to follow the forum instructions regarding payments. System regarding advance payments is quite reliable, justified and safe.

what a loss to the community as i felt they were the
only true and honest coding site around, then Ian bailed....

    I miss RentACoder also
Freelancer.com has poor controls for filtering out scammers. This causes the good coders to be drowned out. I've taken my business elsewhere.
