Freelance sites rating systems a con?

    Hi,

I presently have a designer, from one of freelance sites creating a logo for me. He has done about fifty jobs via the site and has a feedback rating of about 9.3 out of 10 and very little negative feedback.
Yesterday he gave me three samples to choose from. I was so amazed I had to laugh. The standard, of the samples, is about what I'd expect from a ten year old who has a small clipart collection, a rudimentary understanding of microsoft paint , and no artistic talent. Oh yeah the kid has only got ten minutes to do the job as well.
AFAIK There is no bad blood between the designer, and I, as all I did was post the job. He bid. And I selected him. My payment was then placed in an escrow account. The only reason I could think of why he sent me such atrocious work is that he was pissed off that at the time I selected him I asked him the following

"If you want you could try creating a simple icon(using clipart) of a stylised runner chasing a question mark that's glowing like a star. But, since this wasn't in the original job description I don't expect you to do this"

His reply was "I'll send you three samples in two days "

Now if he was pissed off by my polite request all he had to do was say.

"Sorry, mate your request is unfair because if I knew, at the time I bid, I had to add an icon I would have bid higher."

Anyway, because the samples are that bad I can't even be bothered requesting changes be made. For example do I really have to tell a "designer" that I don't want him to use "Jokerman" one of the most abused whacky fonts around.
Also, some might say he was only sending rough drafts then why didn't he give me three font options. Two of the samples have an identical font which isn't even vaguely similar to the fonts I said I liked.
    Anyway enough ranting

    Cheers Don

I'm interested to see the samples.
Sounds like you got a rough deal.

    I know how you feel.
I also use the ratings to select freelancers. In my experiences its generally been good. But ive also had 1 or 2 that the quality wasn't what expected.

But having said that I think it's often hard to tell with creativity type work that you have requested. I mean its very much up to personal opinion on what looks good or not. Although by the sounds of what you've received it sounds like noone would think it looks good.

Where you able to look at his portfolio of works first, maybe you couldve seen what his previous design work was like?

I think however the ratings system is the best there is. ALong with example work

DEpends on GAF you can't get reviews without paying so it's like a husle to try and cheat the reviews

Why didn't you asked hime to show portofolio .... sometimes having reviews don't mean quality
