Hey, I am getting Photoshop for Christmas, however I want something to mess around with now. I need a free hastle free, web design and graphic design software. Is there any out there, and are they any good.

They must be able to create good proffesional looking graphics, and web layouts. I mainly need graphics. I will be using this to create the images of the web layout that then can be sliced and coded.

    Thanks,
    BlueEew.

    hi.

Gimp is very good, and will only get better IMO.

Although I do use Photoshop, my partner exclulsively uses photoshop, I have recently started using GIMP and other Linux Compatible software a lot due to running Ubuntu on my laptop.

Here are some useful bits to get you going on GIMP,

I read through this I found googling when I first used GIMP - bachue.com/alejo/gimptutorial.html
It talks about using gimp for building stuff on this online virtual world, but it is a good basic guide to lot of the tools, you'll see that it isnt too dissimilar to using other Photo editors/graphics packs like photoshop or Serif

like anything though best lessons, just dive in and play with the tools!

Using Photoshop plugins in Gimp with pspi - gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/pspi.html

hope those are of little help.

BTW I also use Komposer build of NVU, good coding program, however its not to good for coding PHP still Dreamweaver has that, or just texteditor like I use

Gimp is probably your best option at the moment.

For coding there are free editors too (e.g. nvu), but it sounds like you want the design side of things.
