free traffic - sell your website

One way you could drive traffic to your website is by putting it up for sale at a website such as sitesell.com or some other website which sells website. Choose a price which you WOULD want to sell your website for and put it up. If no one offers you the price, you will at least get free traffic.

Additionally, people will write about the goods and bads of your website on their blogs which will further cause the blogs' readers to visit your website. More free traffic. Anyone ever try this?

As with the other posts you are making today it depends on the circumstances.

If it relies on users having confidence in your company and your ability to continue to service them then it's very risky. If people get wind that you're selling up they may run straight to a competitor.

I would have to agree. That might be a last ditch effort to get traffic and you certainly wont gain a good name.

quality traffic? I don't think so.. If you are talking about a website that is selling domains or website, perhaps then it'll be a good way to market

It's funny that this is brought up now, Mitchell Harpz blogged about this very tactic about 3 months ago, when his blog was still active. Well it seems the person behind Johncow.com is applying the tactic to get some traffic, he has listed his blog on the SP forums.

    Go figure.

I have thought of this a long time ago. But unless its a webmaster website, usually none of them come back.

Interesting idea, but this won't help for longterm traffic.

You will get a few clicks for a few days but I don't think this is going to change anything.
Concentrating on your content will bring a lot more visitors.

I agree. I wouldn't put my site up for sale just for the traffic...what about when I really do want to put it up for sale and people are questioning the previous sale? :p

Only targeted traffic turns into sales. While you may have traffic that actually has money in their pocket and ready to invest in SOMETHING, most people looking for websites would not be interested in purchasing web hosting from a company who might be sold to a less competent owner.

It's traffic, but not the kind that's going to buy anything or click on your links. In other words, all this will do is slow down your server.

But, if that's what floats your boat, enjoy!

Iv'e never read Mitchell's post on this and I never said I am putting the blog up for sale for the traffic. The traffic is a nice side effect of the sale. People always seem to assume the worst.
