Free Themes Sometimes Leave A Lot To Be Desired.....

I love Wordpress. It's easy to use for a non-techie like me and is great for SEO. What really does bug me though is when I've got a new domain and I search on Wordpress.org and find a free theme which is a perfect fit. A great feeling of satisfaction. I build the site only to find after hours of work (banners, backgrounds, custom colors, menus, categories, blah, blah) that something fundamental doesn't work because of the theme and its coding. Ggrrrhhh!

Maybe it's deliberate - after all, we ARE encouraged to buy premium themes but it's still very annoying! :(

Well, what would you expect from software developers that release their plugins and themes for free? If you need customizations, you'll probably have to pay for them. ;)

Of course, you're totally right Devtard, but I'm talking about a basic function, nothing fancy :(. For instance, a new-ish theme I just tried did not allow categories and posts to show site-wide, only when viewing certain pages. I had to get an 'expert' coder to find out what I was doing wrong and, for once, it wasn't me! lol Unless you know or are interested in coding, the theme's useless and it's a great pity. No doubt, it will be fixed some day but, in the meantime, many (like me) will be attracted by its visual appeal. On the good side, there are plenty without bugs and teething problems and I'm very grateful for those....and so today, I'm not in a ranting mood! :D

The most important thing is that you must have some HTML/CSS and PHP basics... to deal with any other CMS that you deny to use... free and premium wordpress themes are useful to economize time and energy but Nothing is PERFECT... and you will have to edit and tweak it to suit your needs... so learning some php and coding languages is a must... otherwise you will have to Hire and Hire !!
