It's probably legal. The phone companies make money because they charge the person receiving the text message for each text message they receive. In fact, most of the companies allow you to send text messages to any of their customers directly from their website for free.

It's legality depends on how the text messages are sent.

I know virginmobile ( us based prepaid cell phone company) used to allow you to text from their site for free. the recipient still paid for it. I do not know if its still free or not, though. I want to say it changed, but as I said, I am unsure. Do a search on "text for free" or " text for free from computer". I am certain they are probably out there...

I have to believe it is free, because cell phone companies don't charge each other for sending texts. It's the cell phone users who pay all the fees for incoming calls and incoming texts. Cell phone companies only charge their own users; I'm pretty sure. The only reason people have to pay for sending texts is because the company sending it charges them, not the company receiving it.

What is illegal in this case is if someone abuse the sites to send sms and harass the receiver. One sms site I had was closed by hostgator because it was abused for sex harassment.
