Sitemap.im is a free service that generates XML sitemaps for webmasters to help get better crawling from search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo!

I am trying it right now, I will let you know. Sitemaps are important, most people don;t make them anymore, but they do have a value added feature in that lesser-known search engines can traverse your site better with a mapped out xml file.

Of course I am doing one for my forum which out to put this thing to the test ;)

    Update...

That's what I thought would happen. OUT OF MEMORY error. Forum is too big for a freebie sitemap generator. I kind of figured as much.

I'd say for a 10 page site this thing is great. For more than a 1000 pages though you will need some pretty hefty script to handle it. Still a cool thing though.

An option to use the "Last modified" from the page instead of setting it would be an idea.

Runs for a few minutes and then stops for me. No error or anything.

It's still cool though. Like I said it was a pretty large forum scenario I tested it on with about 17,000 members and 32,000 posts. I am not sure how many pages that runs, but it's quite a few. I wanted to test it on my new "base" site. What that is will be a group of pages and the mysql will not be necessary but will still be attached. It sounds weird, but I don't trust databases much. What I am doing is creating a "surface" with a backend that is there, but not necessary to enjoy the site. I'll give it a go then see how it does with that.

If you're running a php scfript, you may have what's known as a session id in the page urls. It's usually a 32 character string of random characters that's used to monitor who's access the site. (That's the short response)

If you don't strip it, every time the spiders visit your site, a new id is generated and the spider may think it's a new page.

-1 for that then. Too many ones out there don't have such a limit. Even fairly small blogs and forums will reach that limit quickly.

Thanks anyway. Good luck with your project.

Thank you, but how much do you suggest ? As far as I saw all of the free services are allowing 500 pages for indexing.

It's up to you really. There are free sitemap builders that don't have limits. Not sure what kind of server load you're looking at.

    Example: http://www.auditmypc.com/free-sitemap-generator.asp

Heck go for a thousand and use the increase as a selling/marketing point. Twice as many as the other guys. :)

If you check the posters previous posts (Click on their name, select the "all posts by..." option) you'll see they're just spamming with nonsense posts at random with no real posts. Just ignore them. They've been reported.
