    @ Hemraj - Marketing can be mainly divided in to two parts - online and offline.

    Online marketing has a few sub categories as well - SEO is meant for making your website popular in Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. And then, we have another category in online promotion which is SMM - Social Media Marketing, which is meant for promoting your website in Social websites like FB, Twitter and business networks like Linkedin, Apsense etc.

    So, SEO and SMM are two different ways of promoting a website on internet. Of late, Search Engine like Google, Yahoo etc have started giving importance to social networking sites like FB and Twitter and a comprehensive online promotion package (which is popularly referred as SEO, but means and covers much more than Search Engines) includes SEO, SMM and much more.

    As for your question, SMM helps in branding a site. For example, its good to have a few hundreds of FB likes, even if they wont make much difference in search engine standings of your site. Same is true for Twitter followers as well.

    SMM, if done properly, can get you targeted traffic and sales/leads. That being said, anything done properly would fetch results in a long run.

    how long does it take for certain keywords to be come up in the first rank ?

    Ranking of keywords depends on certain factors the main one being:

    1. Quality of your site
    2. Quality of other competitive sites
    3. Competitive nature of the keyword, which you are trying to rank.
    4. No and quality of backlinks of the sites with which you are competing.
    5. The way you plan and executive your keyword ranking strategy.

    As per our experience, a keyword of medium competition would generally require 6-8 months to rank from no where to top 10, for a fairly new and standard site. A lot would depend on the above factors. Exact time frame would be a manipulative figure.
