Free Royalty Free Music Sources

Anyone know of any free and copyright/royalty free music collections - like morguefile is for pics.

I have used a songtrack as a background to a youtube vid I have made for my brother in memory of his son. I am trying to contact the singer to ask for permission to use the track in this way but suspect I may have to change the music as I doubt anyone is going to get back to me.

For this project I wouldn't mind to pay a license fee though probably couldn't afford this particular singer. But for other Youtube web vid projects are there any sources for free royalty free music. All those I have found require payment for a dubious collection of sound effect and dodgy music. Any ideas?

I have never been happy with "free" audio that is royalty free. In fact, I have bought some royalty free music that was total crap as well.

I know you are looking for something "free," but all I will say is that if you want something better and you start looking at paid royalty-free music, be sure you listen to it first or else stay clear.

I find loop-based music to be particularly annoying. I describe such music as suffering from "ACID-itis"...an ailment that involves a lot of monotonous build up/unstack musical progressions.

But whatever works for you. If you haven't noticed by now, I am picky about music...

Free is such an broad term.

If you want to find music go to iBeat ... For that kind of thing - a personal video - it's ... 'free'. In this case meaning you don't have to worry about royaltee fees or any $-payment. Heck - if you find a session you like quickly, you wouldn't even need to register.

There is a lot of costly music that sucks. And there is a lot of free music that rocks ... The Freesound Project is one of the best sound/soundscape/fx site on the net - and its also free.

There you have it, my two cents: two sites that are free, and fit the bill for all your audio/music needs.

These two sites are somewhat a reaction to all those shady sites that require payment for a dubious collection of sound effects and dodgy music.

    Thanks guys...

It is a very personal vid and I wanted meaningful vocals. I found a couple of indie artists via creative commons where the use of the track non-commercially is free but you are encouraged to pay for an EP download to support the band. For $5 or so, this I don't mind as I'd listen to the tracks myself anyway. Unfortunately nothing I've found so far fits this particular project.

You know that Youtube is testing Audioswap where it will swap out your soundtrack for one that has artist permission and attribution?

I used that function and ended up with a classical track - not what I wanted but on the right side of the law. :)

Hadn't heard that. I'll check it out.

If its complete tracks - you should pop by CCmixter - at least thats another place to look. Its one of the Creative Commons projects.
