    OK, the main page is PR4 but the individual page where the link would be placed in unranked. Also, I need to give them a link in return. How does this help me? (Not being rude, I just don't know.)

    You dont have to give a return link, thats optional, I submitted my website but never gave them a link in return.

    This can be said for 90% of directories, lets just hope the owner look after their directories and in time those inside pages will also have nice PR.

    On the other hand if a directory has high PR on every pages, I'll bet you my bottom dollar it won't be free anymore..

    OK you usually submit links to directories with no PR on inner pages. This is normal. This gives backlink for your website and when the directory develops you can have backlink of PR website somewhen.
    Also even dmoz and botw are usually with no PR in inner categories.
