If you are requiring a link in exchange it is a TRADE. I hope I've cleared this up for you and you will correct your mistake, lest other posters should thing you are trying to boost your traffic by misleading them.
Free means nothing involved, but if you request something back it's called a trade, it's not considered free. Check the vocabulary
Up is down, black is white? Please. You require a link to your directory. It's not free by definition. It's a reciprocal directory not a free directory. Just go paid, or please be honest. You really think people are going to give you an "real" and lasting backlink for a link in your directory? Did you send money to that King in Nigeria after reading the email?
Even if you believe that your are offering free submittions, you should explain that it requires a backlink in exchange.
