Is there any basic software for creating basic images and graphics for websites? Something easy to use for making simple banners/adverts etc.

GIMP's OK. It'll get you by. However, don't be afraid to dish out the cash for the industry standard: Photoshop. I've got Cs4 Extended, and it's just bloody amazing.
Have to second this one - inkscape is a great product fair play. not as straight forward as some but it aLL depends on what your doing... If its building vectors or just touching up photos etc...

Another vote for GIMP. Personally I can't stand it (lol!), but it seems to be the best of the free graphic programs - at least from what I've seen.
