Free Links without Directories and Link Farms?

    Hi,

    I've been doing link building for years and years and I'm finding it harder to do today. It seems like it all has shifted to paid links, which I do myself...

    But, how about free link building today, in 2012 - ethical, trendy, so that Penguin won't bite you...

    -no link farms
    -link swaps excluded     (have dropped them many years ago...)
    -no directory submissions

    ...so it's hard... how do you do it? (Remember: free linking, no paid links!)

    You should try to generate backlinks for your site by using various off page techniques.

    Kids, I pretty much know that... I was wondering if you knew anything smarter, like "out of the ordinary".
    And exactly: how to generate free backlinks - what tricks to use?
