Free Link Exchange Sites? Sketchy or not?

I was doing a bit of research for link exchanges and typed in "Link Exchange" on Google. The first page was flooded with similar sites that require you to sign up for them.

Most of them are free services that after you sign up you add a link into your account, recieve some code and then add it to your site. In return the site you signed up for says you will receive thousands of back links.

To me this looks really sketchy as I don't understand how it would work by adding this code to your website.

Has anyone ever tried a service like this?

If so is this a good way to go in regards to link exchanges? If not what is the best way to do link exchanges?

I faced with many free link exchange sites when I researched two months ago..
Unfortunatelly, I didn't get good clicks from them..
Now I just use social bookmarking and networking sites

    Hello Mike,

The kind of link exchange you asked, is a good way to get penalized by G.
This used to work like 1 year ago, but not today.

There are thousands of ways to get one way backlink these days. DO some research on this forum and you would get to know.
    Some of them are:

    1. Article submission
    2. Software submission
    3. Social Bookmarking
    4. Signature links from forums
    5. Blogs and Blog comments
    6. wiki and other answer sites, etc

There are hundreds of ways. Do some research.

    Thanks!

the link backs are not very valuable. if you look at a lot of link exchanges the site main page will have a decent PR, but their Links or Resources page will be 0. You are better off doing some posting on message boards and/or blogs. If you are selling a phyiscal product you can use Kaboodle and ThisNext. Kaboodle does really well with Google.

I was thinking of the same thing. I'm glad that I found your question asked here and the responses from other people. So in the end it's not worth it to exchange links with other 1000 sites that you have no idea about. I will keep doing the traditional and manual way to build up my links.
