Free Lance Web-designer seeking advice on first site !

Hello all, as a source of part time income i have decided that i would like to start designing websites for people, businesses/companies and see what happens from there. I took a lot of web, graphic, and computing classes in J.R College so i am very familiar with designing websites and have made multiple websites just never for income of any sort. My goal is to make a site of my own to show future clients what i am able to create for them and hopefully gain their interests. Again this is something i will be doing in my spare time and is not something that i am depending on as my only source of income. My dilemma is that i am not sure what the context or base of my first site should be? I asked my current employer if i could make a site for our company and he said i could for practice but they already had contracts with web designers and so forth. Should i make a business style site to attract clients? or should i make a about me site ex. www. (my initials)design.com so people can view and gather information about me and how to contact to me and so forth. If anyone can help decide what the best option would be for me i would greatly appreciate it !! i am new to this site thank you
