Why do some people offer free hosting?

What are the downsides of free hosting?

I'm told SE's view free hosting lower for SEO and PR but how do they know?

    1. Some people offer free hosting, because they have an incentive. Either they have advertisements on your site, and they collect all the revenue, or they have links back to their site in which gets them more traffic, and the generates revenue in the long run.

    2. There is a reason why its free. Support is usually poor, but not in all cases. Your site may be overwhelmed with advertisements, that its hard to navigate or load. The server your on might not have good uptime, because the service is free.

    3. Not sure about this one. :D

Some just offer it so that you can test out their services, and may not offer to much space or bandwidth. :)

Hasty host can you explain band width to me or point me where I can read up on it. Width implies how much at one time but I'm wondering if its time dependant as well

Transfer is the amount of data that an account is allowed to send back and
forth in a given time period. For example, 10 GB per month.

Bandwidth is the speed at which data can be transferred through the medium. For
example, 10 Mbps (Megabits per second).

    Hope that helps :)

    Umm, no..

Bandwidth: Bandwidth can be best described as gas for a car. If your website runs out of bandwidth nobody will be able to visit it. 1GB of bandwidth is equal to over 100,000 hits. Your bandwidth number used will reset back to zero on the first of every month.
In a nutshell: Bandwidth, is the amount of people that can visit your site monthly, which is measured in gigabytes.

Disk Space: Disk Space is the amount of space you have for your website's files.
In a nutshell: How much files you can store on your server..

Hope this answered your question Paul8368.

    Somewhat true :)

Here is additional information to help you understand, given by Zongoo! Computers,

" Too often web hosts talk about bandwidth and data transfer in the same breath but truth be known they are different although very closely related.

Bandwidth is how much data can be transferred at a time and data transfer is how much data is being transferred.

Think of it this way. If bandwidth were a bridge, then the bigger the bridge is the more vehicles can pass through it. While data transfer is the number of vehicles allowed on the bridge in say a month. In essence, data transfer is the consumption of bandwidth. "

    No, your getting confused..

There is a big difference between "Network" bandwidth and data transfer.

Disk Space is not, nor does it mean data transfer.

Bandwidth is not, nor does it mean Network Bandwidth.

What you explained above, is what they call "network bandwidth"

Thanks for trying to explain Xuxa :)

He asked the following "Hasty host can you explain band width to me or point me where I can read up on it."

So I'm providing information on bandwidth and data transfers, not disk space.
I'm only trying to provide him more knowledge of the two.

Paul8368, if you have any more questions, let me know.

    Thanks

I'm just trying to make sure he is not getting the wrong information..

He asked about "free hosting" so he is most likely implying "shared" hosting. Data Transfer/Bandwidth Transfer is only involved with dedicated servers.

Now I am really confused say in your sig HastyHost you indicate 100GB Disk space so thats how much I could store there. 1000Gb Bandwidth, for me its shared hosting as indicated but the accounts do indicate a bandwidth based on how much you pay so it can't be overall network it must be account specific I'm guessing. I'm just trying to decide which to use

I give free hosting, but I need a back link to my directories.

if your site is PR3+ I need one back link (No proxies)

if your site is PR2 or under, I need two back links.

(you can get cPanel hosting with 3 different IPs (D Class)

    Thanks
